100 years of the ILA: Commemorative coin and postage stamp to mark anniversary

Berlin, 27 May 2009 – To mark the 100th anniversary of the ILA Berlin Air Show the German government will be issuing a 10 Euro silver commemorative coin and a special postage stamp on 4 June 2009. The commemorative coin and stamp will be presented for the first time during a ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the first ILA, on 27 May at the Palais am Funkturm in Berlin.

The obverse of the commemorative coin, bearing the legend “100 Jahre Internationale Luftfahrtausstellung” (100 years of the Berlin Air Show), is the work of the Berlin artist Bodo Broschat and features a three-part image depicting the extensive scope of aviation. “The frontal view of a modern aircraft approaching the runway represents the dynamic nature of flight”, in the opinion of the jury. The panel that chose the winning design also stated that “the entire range of aviation and space flight is depicted here in a most interesting form, from the earliest days right up to the present”. It encompasses Otto Lilienthal’s flying machines as well as the International Space Station ISS. The coin bears the inscription “FASZINATION FLIEGEN * TRADITION * INNOVATION *”.

Due to be issued on 4 June 2009, the coin (minted in Munich, weight: 18g, diameter: 32.5 mm, material: sterling silver 925), in “brilliant uncirculated“ quality (approx. 1.6 mi. coins minted.), and with a face value of ten euros, will be available from Deutsche Bundesbank outlets and from many banks and savings banks. The coin can also be purchased in the higher ”proof-like” quality (approx. 0.2 mi. coins minted.), at a cost of 15 euros from the coin collector’s outlet Verkaufsstelle für Sammlermünzen der Bundesrepublik Deutschland (VfS), 92626 Weiden (www.deutsche-sammlermuenzen.de). The coins can also be obtained from commercial dealers.

The design of the special commemorative stamp with the legend “100 Jahre Internationale Luft- und Raumfahrtausstellung” (100 years of the Berlin Air Show) shows the poster for the first International Airship Exhibition in Frankfurt in May 1909 and is the work of Andrea Voss-Acker from Wuppertal. The 55 cent denomination stamp will be obtainable from 4 June 2009 at all outlets of Deutsche Post.
